The pike square was a military tactic that dominated European battlefields in the late Middle Ages. Teams of 100 men, carrying steel-tipped spears called pikes, moved in a ten-by-ten formation. The pike square was nearly invincible until advancements in firearms made pikemen obsolete in the 17th century.

The pike square required troops acting with exceptional coordination. A pikeman operating without the protection of the formation was an easy target. But well-trained and well-drilled troops acting together as a single unit formed a fast, agile, and lethal offensive weapon.
